Changing your oil is one of the simplest and most important ways to keep your car running for years to come. It should be changed regularly, about every 3,000 miles or 6 months . Your car is an important investment and learning how to change the oil yourself will ensure that your car will last for a long time.
You will need to first collect all the items needed to change your oil. You will need a large container, socket wrench, oil filter wrench, about 4 to 5 quarts of oil, oil filter, funnel, and rags. You will also need a car jack and jack stands in the case that accessing your oil filter is difficult. Put the parking brake on and jack your car up so it is easy to work on. Make sure all your tools and oil are within your grasp.
After you jack the car up, you will need to park the car on a level surface and remove the drain plug from the bottom of the oil pan. Find the plug and loosen it with the socket wrench. Remove it by hand by turning it counter clockwise. The oil will come rushing out, so be prepared. Drain the oil into the large container until the flow stops completely. Once the oil is drained, you will also need to replace the old gaskets for the drain pan with new ones. Put the drain plug back in and tighten it using the socket wrench.
You will now need to remove the old oil filter using the oil filter wrench. You will need to wrap it around the oil filter and remove it by turning it counter clockwise. Once removed, coat the new filter gaskets with fresh oil to make sure that a nice seal occurs. You can tighten the new filter by hand and is recommended to prevent damage to the oil filter threads by excessive tightening. Turn the filter clockwise this time. It is important to tighten it gently. Excessive tightening may cause a leak in your filter.
The last step of the process is adding the new oil to your car. On the top of your engine, you will find the oil filler cap. Using a funnel, drop the recommended amount of quarts of oil into the engine. Once done, replace the oil filler cap and turn your vehicle on. Warming up your engine for a minute or two will allow you to get the proper oil level of your automobile. You should leave the car running when you check your oil. Pull out the dipstick and make sure that the levels are good. If they are a little low, you should put a quarter quart in it and keep doing this until you get the levels corrected.
Learning how to change the oil in your vehicle can be a rewarding way to take care of your car. With this information, you will never have to wait in line again for an oil change.
